Platforms aren't launched; they're earned. You win with a sharp wedge — one workflow done better than anyone — then expand only after you've become indispensable at it.

The roadmap

  1. Win the wedge completely. Be the obvious best choice for one workflow before you even think about expanding. A mediocre wedge can't support a platform.
  2. Expand along the customer's adjacent pain. The next feature should be the thing they were about to buy another tool for.
  3. Become the system of record for your data. Owning the data makes every adjacent expansion easier and stickier.
  4. Resist premature breadth. Each early expansion that dilutes the wedge is a gift to a focused competitor.

Bottom line: earn the platform by dominating a wedge first, then expand into adjacent pain — breadth before depth kills more would-be platforms than competition does.
