The first wave of AI features lived in a panel users had to remember to open. The durable ones disappeared into the workflow — the draft is already written, the anomaly already flagged, the task already done.

Designing for disappearance

  • Default to done. Where you're confident, complete the task and let the user confirm, rather than asking them to start.
  • Surface, don't summon. Bring the right thing forward at the right moment instead of making users go find a feature.
  • Keep a glass box. Disappearing UI must still show its work on demand, or trust evaporates the first time it's wrong.
  • Measure outcomes, not engagement. Time-in-app is the wrong goal when the win is the user spending less time and getting more done.

Bottom line: the best AI interface often isn't a new screen — it's the steps you removed; design for outcomes delivered, not features visited.
